Murray Park Iris

Golden Reeves is taking care of the iris at Murray Park.  It was a great display!  If you didn't make it to the park, here is what you missed:

The original bed was all hybrid iris, but had a severe quack grass infestation. Karen Crook and Becky Hansen decide to remove all the iris, spray the grass, then replant the iris. Unfortunately, the iris dried out before we could replant them. Karen had visited an iris garden in northern Utah called Zebra Gardens. She contacted the owner who agreed to donate new iris in exchange for helping him put together a large order for the USU Botanical garden. We spent a good part of a day helping him clean and label irises and received lots of gorgeous hybrid irises in return. Last year, Golden adopted the garden after seeing how lovely the blooms where. He also added some of his own. He has weeded and fertilized the garden the last two years.

Farewell Colorado Blue Spruce; Colorado can have you as their state tree now (oh wait, they already do). Welcome Quaking Aspen! After 81 years of blue spruce, the 2014 Utah legislative session voted to change Utah's state tree from Picea pungens (commonly known as the Colorado Blue Spruce) to Populus tremuloids, the beautiful Quaking Aspen.

Awards

Silver Trowel Award – Nominated by project leaders and awarded to master gardener's who demonstrate extraordinary enthusiasm in a project by putting in extra hours, either hands-on or in research.
  • Sandy Silletto for Gilgal Gardens. Sandy has been a terrific asset to the garden. She is enthusiastic, cheerful, and always contributing great ideas. Graduating in 2012, she came almost every week to the garden last year and most days brought along her husband John (a whirling dervish with a shovel!) to help. They are both hard workers and fun to work with. Sandy was a career school teacher but now retired as a Master Gardener she prefers to just get her hands dirty and gain gardening knowledge from those around her.
  • Amy Hargreaves-Judzis for Garden Patch Newsletter. Amy has been instrumental in getting the Garden Patch Newsletter back on its feet. She took a jumbled mess of information and format and organized it into a readable, mailable form. Her efforts greatly improved the communication of our group!

Outstanding Volunteers Award – A SLMGA Master Gardener who goes above and beyond in volunteering many hours at our projects and demonstrating extra dedication during the year to the Association and community.
  • Tony and Ilene Mirabella. Tony and Ilene take great care of our organization. They can always be counted on to help with monthly meetings, big events or anywhere that there is a need. Thank you for your hard work!
  • LeeAnn Ehrhart. LeeAnn demonstrated a great willingness to help this year but heading up the Garden Patch Newsletter and maintaining our blog. Her eagerness to help is greatly appreciated!

Don & Bev Sudbury Award – This award is given periodically to a Master Gardener who exemplifies the spirit of the Sudbury's in his/her dedication demonstrated by long-term service to the Association.

This year, Judi Short exemplified the Sudbury's love of gardening and serving the community by her extraordinary dedication to Gilgal Gardens. She kept the garden running and volunteers coming in, as well as spear headed memorials to our dear friend Bev Sudbury. Thank you for your service Judi!
